About 7 years ago, we discovered that we were cleaning our dishes, countertops and cutting boards with the dirtiest item in our home: the kitchen sponge. We looked around, and with all the consumer products out there, there wasn’t one specifically designed to clean sponges. We thought there had to be a better way to keep sponges and sponge holders clean – so we went to work.
Matthew Flannery (Founder & Chief Executive Officer) along with co-founder Tod Maitland, invented, patented and developed SpongeBath. Prior to founding SpongeBath LLC, Matthew was a professional cameraman and still photographer for over 18 years. Film and television credits include Rounders, Boiler Room,16 Blocks, Emmy nominated show Sex and the City (the HBO series and both films) and Showtime’s The Big C. He is also the creator of “Moving Portraits,” an iPhone app, and the Founder of Visseon Inc. a film equipment rental company. Matthew has a life-long passion for science, technology and design and for creating elegant solutions to solve everyday problems. Matthew has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Photography from Syracuse University.
Cordelia Ryan (EVP of Legal Affairs/GC) – Cordelia has a multi-faceted background in operations and legal affairs in both fast-paced startups and established companies, collaborating with all business units to develop products and execute complex strategies. She was VP & GC at Knowledge Delivery Systems; SVP of Corporate Development & GC at MeMedia (formerly Whenu.com); and SVP, Business & Legal Affairs at Freud Communications (NY). She started her legal career as a corporate associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Cordelia received her BA in Psychology from Dartmouth College and JD from Fordham School of Law.
Susette Franklin (COO) was one of the original five members of Bloomberg L.P., instrumental in growing a start-up business to a multi-billion dollar global company. An accomplished leader known for building and structuring departments for optimal performance. She had unprecedented success in negotiating purchasing agreements saving millions of dollars year over year. Additionally, she worked at Thomson Reuters managing various projects working with executives and key stakeholders. Susette has a BBA in General Business from Pace University.
Jim Bugden (Chief Financial Officer) – Jim has worked in the venture backed, start-up space since 2000. He most recently worked as CFO for Solve Media, the leader in online brand engagement advertising. Prior to that, he lead finance teams at Rent the Runway, myYearbook.com (acquired by QuePasa, Inc. in November 2011), The Govberg Group, TurnTide (acquired by Symantec in 2004) and half.com (acquired by eBay in 2000). Jim has also consulted for leading venture capital firms and portfolio companies. Jim graduated from the University of Delaware with a BS in Accounting and earned his CPA during his 7 years with Deloitte.
Tod Maitland (Founder) – Along with Matthew, Tod invented, patented and developed SpongeBath. Prior to founding SpongeBath LLC, Tod Co-founded The Hollywood Edge, the world’s largest sound library company with an e-commerce platform. He also founded New Deal Inc., a sound equipment rental company. Tod is a three-time Academy Award-nominated sound mixer. Tod has worked on more than 90 films, including Seabiscuit, I Am Legend, JFK and Tootsie. Tod and Matt are utilizing the “Hollywood Business Model”-– well-suited to an innovative, fast-paced start-up. Tod is passionate about designing and bringing products to market that will help improve people’s lives.
